Minneola
It’s the only thing that makes any sense.
The only thing that makes me write.
Makes me sing about orange skin.
There are no seeds to speak of.
No words to praise the ease of the peel.
Go ahead.
Break open the fruit.
Separate the slice.
Watch the fountain of citrus
Fly in the face of danger.
The taste is almost tangible.
A little like tangerine.
It out shouts sugar.
Out-sugars chocolate.
Out maneuvers anything I remember.
Any crop I’ve ever known.
Billy at the produce stand winks.
He whispers: they’re here.
Asks if I want a case.
Sight unseen
I buy three bags for three dollars.
It completes a meal.
It satisfies the snack.
It helps immunities.
Keeps me hopeful.
Keeps me sober.
Unites my soul.
Unties my shame.
There are no atheists
When Minneolas are in season.
I am having one right now.
I am done for.
God help me.
I am fructified. 1/08
